This weekend all four teams are in action again but only the Reserves are at home.

The 1sts travel to Wadham Lodge, who were promoted with us last season, as Champions, so this will be a good test for the lads.

The 2nds are at home to Herongate.

The 3rds travel to Old Barkabbeyans and the 4ths to Markyate.

Good luck to all.
SUBJECT: 1st Team Match Report from Lee "Scoop" WrightPOSTED: 6/09/10 @ 11:23 AM

With such a disappointing defeat to Herongate last week, Upminster were hungry to get their first victory of the season. This week they were met with a first round cup tie away to Lakeside, home to the famous retail outlet, Arena Essex and mushroom football pitches.

The incentive was clear….with Lakeside being the home team and a league above Upminster, they were the favourites; however Upminster knew that if they played their football and kept their concentration – there could be an upset on the cards.

The first half was scrappy….with neither team able to pass the ball well on a bumpy, hard, mushroom filled pitch. With Lakeside resorting to long ball tactics…..a break was bound to come their way and it finally did when their striker, who could only be described as ‘a tank’, stumbled into the box with the ball and was pursued by Sean Harley and a covering Dan Drury….The striker had no control over the ball and felt the need to dive past a sliding Sean Harley with no contact made whatsoever (I swear)…and Lakeside were awarded an undeserved and unjustifiable penalty, which was cooling slotted away.

So it was 1-0 Lakeside and Upminster had to respond quickly….with a lovely diagonal cross from Lee Wright into the opponent’s danger area, Dean Francis pressured the goalkeeper and in doing so caused him to miss his punch completely and allow Adam Cook to head, yes head, into an empty net. With Upminster now on the front foot, they were suddenly finding their game and were pressurising Lakeside’s defence with countless amounts of corners and crosses. Finally the hard work paid off, with Louis Elwood’s inswinging cross glanced on by a determined Rob Dunkley which looped over the despairing goalkeeper….the underdogs were 2-1 up at half time!

Upminster knew that they had to keep their concentration….especially for the first 10 minutes of the second half – these were crucial and knew that the next goal could decide the fate of the game. Unfortunately some lazy marking from a set piece cost Upminster a goal and a poor pass back from Sean Harley allowed ‘the tank’ to nip past a stranded Liam O’Riordan and cooling convert into an empty net. Within the first 20 minutes of the second half, Upminster found themselves 3-2 down, due to some sloppy play. Upminster needed a bit of luck from the unpredictable pitch, and finally did when a pass back was sliced by Lakeside’s goalkeeper falling to Adam Cook who cooling slotted home….3-3! And the game went into extra time….

Upminster showed great fitness, determination, fight and heart after coming back for a second time and this was clearly displayed by Joe Sweeny, Robert Dunkley and Gavin Major in the midfield….all of which ran their socks off for the team. Upminster defended resiliently in extra time and with both sides creating little…the game was destined to be decided on dreaded penalties. This cruel way of deciding a game is all down to luck and unfortunately for our boys….Upminster couldn’t convert – Lakeside won 4-1 on penalties. A special mention to Glenn Wright though who confidently placed his penalty to the keeper’s right….two in two now for the skipper!

Upminster have been unlucky in their last two games both in league and cup but shouldn’t feel too disheartened. Herongate was played with a good passing game and Lakeside was played with a lot of heart and spirit…showing Upminster have the full package and can adapt to any type of game, which should hold them in good stead for the rest of the season.

Things can only get better it seems, as all four teams suffered defeats this weekend!

The 1sts came closest to a victory as they lost on penalties away at Lakeside in the Senior Divisions Cup after a 3 - 3 draw. Dean Francis scored two and Adam Cook the other.

After their superb opening result last week, the Reserves came back down to earth with a thump as they suffered a 2 - 0 defeat at home to Hutton.

The 3rds started their season with a 6 - 1 away defeat at Mayfair Athletic.

The 4ths lost 3 - 0 away at Eastside Rovers.

To raise funds for the clubhouse development there is a 'buy-a-brick' scheme at £50 each. Your name on a brick for ever and a day - Andy Warhol only said you would get 15 minutes which makes this a real bargain !!!

See El Presidente if you would like to make a donation to our future in this way.

A good time was had by all as in excess of 50 members celebrated last season.

1st Team Player's Player : Gavin Major
2nd Team Player's Player : James Lakey

SUBJECT: Essex Olympian League AGMPOSTED: 11/06/10 @ 05:18 PM

The constitution has been agreed and due to new clubs joining, the Reserves have been put up into Division 2 for next season.

The 'Respect Campaign' will impact more upon us next season and this was stressed to all clubs by the Management Committee.

We reached the giddy heights of the top half of the 'discipline table' and I must congratulate all for their efforts in this endeavour. There is still a long way to go however and noting that Leytonstone Utd won awards for sportsmanship and discipline last night which totalled in excess of £800 - the benefits of further improvements are obvious and far reaching in these days where finance is as much an issue for Man Utd as it is for us!

Mark Nokes managed to go through the season with no admin fines whatsoever - that is undoubtedly a first for the Club at Olympian level and he should be congratulated for this feat although Bob, Jim, Dave & Joe all did their part and can share the 'pat-on-the-back' from El Presidente.

Even noting that we did not win one of the 'admin awards' (£112 each) so again there is room for betterment and a reward for doing so.

SUBJECT: CLUB ANNUAL GENERAL MEETINGPOSTED: 1/06/10 @ 09:47 PM

A rather disappointing attendance of approx. 20 members, principally 1st/2nd team players in addition to the club officers, re-elected Paul Sewell as the Chairman and Mark Nokes as the secretary.

Due to work commitments Gerry Kelly is standing down as Assistant Secretary but no one came forward for election in his place. This position essentially deals with the Romford & District League matters.

Steve Price stood down as Treasurer but Kevin Sewell was elected in his place.

Bob was re-elected 1st team Manager and Dave/Jim/Joe as the Reserves Management Team.

After Tony Pockett's mid-season resignation for personal reasons, Mike Rice took over the reins as 3rd Team Manager but cannot continue in any capacity next season. No one was put forward as the new manager and although Jamie Hossacks had indicated an interest, he was not there and could not be elected in his absence or without confirmation of his intentions.

Mark Dunnage is standing down as 4th Team Manager due to work commitments but no one was put forward as his replacement.

As can be seen, the Romford League aspects are vulnerable to collapse. It was stated by the Chairman and agreed by all in attendance that we should not withdraw from the league as we are proud of our long connection therewith and feel the football at that level to be an important part of the Club's make-up and reputation. We will, therefore, continue to seek renewal of our place in the League's Constitution and carry any fine should matters not be able to be turned around, although everyone was positive that this could be achieved.

There are a few other positions in the club that need filling and should anyone feel the need to get involved you will be greatly welcomed. Please speak to Paul and he will go through the jobs available to see if there is one you would like to do.

Annual subscriptions will remain at £45 and match fees at £5.

Paul ended by thanking all retiring officers for their work on behalf of the club and Bob & Dave ended by reminding all that training starts 1st July !!!!

Severe disappointment was expressed by those present that the club have not held an end-of-season presentation night. We considered the idea of having a pre-season function where last season's honours would be dealt with and signing-on for the new season could take place. It was also considered that we meet at the club one Saturday night when England have a game, watch the match and deal with the presentations at half-time.

However, it has now been arranged for there to be a Presentation Night at the Clubhouse on Saturday 3rd July - 7pm onwards. It is NOT designed as a "players only" evening and "Player-of-the-Year Awards" for ALL 4 teams will be presented so lets all get there with wives, girlfriends, family, etc. and have a great bonding session in readiness for more success next season. Entry is free but we will be seeking some funding for the club by way of a raffle and/or bus stops, etc. so bring some spare cash !!!
