First game of the new season on a wet and windy Wednesday night! Herongate with close ties to the club were our opponents and would prove a hard team to break down.
We started well even with a very quick pitch which made it hard to control our passes and touch, but even with the hard conditions, we did start to create a few good chances. Joe & Kev slowly started to control the middle and with adam and gav linking up and some good crosses from Rob Dunkley, Lee and Gav we nearly got an early lead.
The back three were without skipper Glenn Wright but a young Danny Drury didn’t look out of place and as a three were never really in trouble.
Second half started with us on top, just as we were in the first half, knocking the ball left to right freely and patiently building up play. Unfortunately (apart from the odd misplaced pass) we made one mistake which went on to lose us the game. A blip in communication between Liam and Joe lead to Joe being dispossessed on the edge of the box and thus leaving their striker (Danny Steel - one of our old boys) one-on-one with Liam and led to an easy finish.
I think it was fair to say that we should have gone away with something if not all 3 points, but it goes to prove that in this league there is no room for mistakes.
Good start to the season but shame about the result.

With such a disappointing defeat to Herongate last week, Upminster were hungry to get their first victory of the season. This week they were met with a first round cup tie away to Lakeside, home to the famous retail outlet, Arena Essex and mushroom football pitches.
The incentive was clear….with Lakeside being the home team and a league above Upminster, they were the favourites; however Upminster knew that if they played their football and kept their concentration – there could be an upset on the cards.
The first half was scrappy….with neither team able to pass the ball well on a bumpy, hard, mushroom filled pitch. With Lakeside resorting to long ball tactics…..a break was bound to come their way and it finally did when their striker, who could only be described as ‘a tank’, stumbled into the box with the ball and was pursued by Sean Harley and a covering Dan Drury….The striker had no control over the ball and felt the need to dive past a sliding Sean Harley with no contact made whatsoever (I swear)…and Lakeside were awarded an undeserved and unjustifiable penalty, which was cooling slotted away.
So it was 1-0 Lakeside and Upminster had to respond quickly….with a lovely diagonal cross from Lee Wright into the opponent’s danger area, Dean Francis pressured the goalkeeper and in doing so caused him to miss his punch completely and allow Adam Cook to head, yes head, into an empty net. With Upminster now on the front foot, they were suddenly finding their game and were pressurising Lakeside’s defence with countless amounts of corners and crosses. Finally the hard work paid off, with Louis Elwood’s inswinging cross glanced on by a determined Rob Dunkley which looped over the despairing goalkeeper….the underdogs were 2-1 up at half time!
Upminster knew that they had to keep their concentration….especially for the first 10 minutes of the second half – these were crucial and knew that the next goal could decide the fate of the game. Unfortunately some lazy marking from a set piece cost Upminster a goal and a poor pass back from Sean Harley allowed ‘the tank’ to nip past a stranded Liam O’Riordan and cooling convert into an empty net. Within the first 20 minutes of the second half, Upminster found themselves 3-2 down, due to some sloppy play. Upminster needed a bit of luck from the unpredictable pitch, and finally did when a pass back was sliced by Lakeside’s goalkeeper falling to Adam Cook who cooling slotted home….3-3! And the game went into extra time….
Upminster showed great fitness, determination, fight and heart after coming back for a second time and this was clearly displayed by Joe Sweeny, Robert Dunkley and Gavin Major in the midfield….all of which ran their socks off for the team. Upminster defended resiliently in extra time and with both sides creating little…the game was destined to be decided on dreaded penalties. This cruel way of deciding a game is all down to luck and unfortunately for our boys….Upminster couldn’t convert – Lakeside won 4-1 on penalties. A special mention to Glenn Wright though who confidently placed his penalty to the keeper’s right….two in two now for the skipper!
Upminster have been unlucky in their last two games both in league and cup but shouldn’t feel too disheartened. Herongate was played with a good passing game and Lakeside was played with a lot of heart and spirit…showing Upminster have the full package and can adapt to any type of game, which should hold them in good stead for the rest of the season.
